Heart warming moments from companions, clients and families.
A Cup of Tea and a Dog Called Ruby
When I joined POPIN Home Support, I wasn't simply looking for a job. I was looking for something meaningful, something that would allow me to make a genuine difference to someone's day.
My first client was Mrs B and, her faithful companion, Ruby the dog.
From the moment I first stepped through the door, Mrs B welcomed me warmly into her home. She has a gentle, caring nature and a wonderful sense of humour. The kind of person who can find something to smile about, even on an ordinary day. It wasn't long before our visits felt less like appointments and more like catching up with a friend.
In those early days, I spent time getting to know Mrs B and understanding what was important to her. I learned about her routines, her favourite foods, the little habits that made her house feel like home, and the things that brought her comfort. Trust isn't something that can be rushed. It grows over cups of tea, shared stories, familiar faces, and simply showing up when you say you will.
Mrs B lives independently with Ruby and is living with dementia. While she benefits from support and companionship, she remains fiercely proud of her home and the life she has built within it. I began helping with the little things that can sometimes become overwhelming. Tidying here, organising there, preparing meals, and making sure everything remained exactly where Mrs B expected to find it. She likes order, and having things in their place helps her feel calm and comfortable.
The best moments, however, often happen beyond the front door.
Together we've enjoyed dog walks with Ruby, coffee outings, shopping trips, visits to the canal, and afternoons watching the world go by at the local aerodrome. Some days are full of adventure, while others are simply about enjoying good company and conversation.
What I've learned from Mrs B is that companionship isn't about grand gestures. It's about consistency. It's about being present. It's about knowing someone is looking forward to your visit.
I am incredibly grateful to Mrs B and her family for trusting me to be part of her journey. It has been a privilege to support her, share so many lovely moments together, and witness first-hand the difference that companionship can make.
